The head is the horizontal member that spans the top of a hollow metal door frame, tying the two jambs together and carrying the stop that the door closes against. This piece is supplied as a single section, sized by its opening width and by the jamb depth (throat) that has to match the finished thickness of the wall it sits in.

Formed from sheet steel with a return leg on each face, the head slips over the wall edge so the drywall or masonry is captured between the flanges. On knock-down frames the head and jambs are mitred or notched to interlock at the corners; on welded frames a head of this type is used for replacement and repair work where an existing member is damaged or a frame is being reworked in the field.

Steel frame components are normally supplied in a shop primer and are intended to be finish painted after installation, once anchors, grout or shims are set and the joints have been filled.
