Frame heads are formed from sheet metal into a profile that carries a stop and rabbet matching the door leaf, with the throat dimension set to suit the wall thickness the frame is installed in. The head mitres or notches into the jambs at the corners and is fastened or welded to complete the opening.

Because heads are profile-specific, the section must match the jambs it joins: the same throat depth, the same stop height and the same rabbet so the door hangs and latches correctly and the frame reads as one continuous piece.
