28 in. x 6-1/8 in. Metal Door Head
The head is the horizontal member that spans the top of a hollow metal door frame, tying the two jambs together and forming the upper stop the door closes against. On knocked-down frames the head arrives as a separate piece and is joined to the jambs on site, so a replacement or made-up head lets a frame be assembled, repaired or reworked without replacing the whole opening.
Like the rest of a pressed steel frame, the section is roll-formed or brake-formed into a profile with a soffit, integral door stop and returns on both faces. Mitred or notched ends interlock with the jamb tops, and the assembled frame is then anchored to the rough opening and grouted or shimmed as the wall type requires. Steel heads accept field welding, screw fastening and paint or touch-up coatings.
Because the profile must match the jambs it joins, the throat depth and the length of the head govern which opening it will serve. Check the existing frame profile, wall thickness and door width before pairing a head with jambs.
