The head is the horizontal member that spans the top of a hollow metal door frame, tying the two jambs together and forming the upper stop for the door. It carries the same stop and rabbet profile as the jambs so the door closes against a continuous seat on all three sides.

Formed from sheet steel, the head is supplied as a separate piece for knock-down frame assembly, where the jambs and head are joined on site at the opening rather than shipped as a welded unit. The stated dimensions describe the door opening width it is cut for and the jamb depth it matches, which corresponds to the thickness of the wall assembly it wraps.
