Base shoe is the small quarter-round-style trim that closes the joint between baseboard and finish floor. Its slightly asymmetric profile lets it sit tight against the base while riding over minor variations in the floor surface, hiding the expansion gap left at the perimeter of wood, laminate and resilient flooring.

This is profile #66, supplied in 8 ft. lengths and sold by the piece. Base shoe is nailed to the baseboard rather than the floor so the flooring beneath remains free to move, and it is typically fastened with slender finish or brad nails set below the surface for filling.
