Mesh-backed mosaic tile sold by the sheet, made up of small square tesserae in a light gray tone. Sheets of this size are the standard format for mosaic, letting a large area be set in one pass instead of placing individual chips.

The backing mesh keeps the joints evenly spaced and allows the sheet to be cut with a utility knife between rows to fit a run, or nipped and trimmed at outlets, corners and edge profiles. Sheets butt together so the grout joint between sheets matches the joints within them, and the small unit size lets the tile follow gentle curves and shallow slopes such as a shower floor draining to a center drain.

Set in thin-set mortar over a sound, flat substrate and grout with a joint size to match the factory spacing. Because mosaic has a high proportion of grout joint to tile face, substrate preparation and full mortar coverage matter more than they do with large-format tile.
