The stock is solid red oak with a plain square profile on all four faces, so it can be left square-cut for a Craftsman or Mission balustrade, or turned and detailed on site. Oak takes stain evenly and holds crisp arrises, which matters where the post meets a handrail fitting or a shoe rail.

Posts of this kind are supplied unfinished so the balustrade can be sanded and finished as a unit with the treads and handrail. Installation is typically by lag or hanger bolt into the floor framing, the stringer or a bolted-through mounting block.
