Metal track is the horizontal member of a light-gauge steel framing system. It is a U-shaped channel, roll-formed from galvanized steel with a flat web and two plain legs, and it is fastened to the floor and the structure above to receive the ends of vertical studs. One run of track sets the line of the wall; the studs drop into it and are secured with screws, pins or welds depending on the assembly.

Track is sized by web width to match the studs it holds, so the stud seats inside the channel with the legs bearing against its flanges. Gauge identification marks on the steel let the installer confirm the thickness of the material on site after bundles have been broken open. Because the sections are light and cut with a chop saw, snips or shears, layout and framing move quickly compared with dimensional lumber, and the steel does not shrink, warp or burn.
