A joist hanger is a formed sheet-metal connector that supports the end of a joist where it meets a header, beam or ledger. The U-shaped seat carries the joist end while the flanges fasten to the face of the supporting member, so the connection relies on fasteners in shear rather than on end-nailing or toe-nailing into end grain.

Pre-punched nail holes in the flanges and side plates locate the fasteners and keep them clear of the timber edges. Hangers are installed with the joist seated tight to the bottom of the stirrup and the top of the joist flush with the top of the header, with every hole filled using the fastener type the connector is designed for.
