Welded wire mesh is a steel reinforcement fabric made from cold-drawn wire welded at every intersection into a square grid. In slab-on-grade work it does not carry the slab the way designed rebar does; it holds shrinkage and temperature cracks tight so they stay hairline instead of opening and spalling.

This is the common 6 x 6 - 10/10 pattern: a 6 in. grid of 10-gauge wire in both directions, supplied as a roll covering 750 square feet. Roll stock is handled by two workers, unrolled across the prepared subgrade and reverse-rolled or weighted to flatten before the pour.

Sheets are lapped one full square at the seams and tied, then lifted to the middle third of the slab thickness on chairs or mesh supports so the steel sits in the concrete rather than under it.
