Hip and ridge cap shingles are the pre-formed asphalt caps that finish the peaks and hip lines of a shingle roof. They fold over the angle of the framing and lap one over the next, closing the most exposed joint on the roof against wind-driven rain while giving the ridge a defined, uniform shadow line. Using a manufactured cap instead of field-cut three-tab pieces means each unit is already sized, scored and surfaced for the bend, so the installer works faster and the cap weathers in step with the field shingles.

This is GAF's cap shingle in the Hickory blend, a warm brown granule mix meant to coordinate with GAF architectural and strip shingles in the same family of colors. Like all asphalt cap shingles, it is built on a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and surfaced with ceramic-coated mineral granules, and it carries a factory sealant strip that bonds each course to the one below once the roof warms.

Caps are sold by the bundle and estimated in linear feet of hip and ridge, including any run over a shingle-over ridge vent. They are the last course installed on the roof, nailed so that each fastener is covered by the following cap.
