A box newel is the primary anchor post in a stair balustrade, carrying the handrail at the bottom of a flight, at landings and at turns. Unlike a turned newel machined from a solid blank, a box newel is built up as a hollow four-sided post, which keeps the weight down on a large-section post and allows it to be sleeved over a framing member or fastened down to the floor and stringer with a newel anchor or lag hardware.

This one is made up in oak with recessed flat panels worked into the faces, a traditional profile that suits Craftsman, Colonial and transitional stair work. The square section gives a flat, full-width surface for handrail and fitting attachment, and the top is left to be finished with a separate newel cap.

Oak is the standard species for site-finished stair parts: it is hard enough to take the abuse a newel gets at the foot of a stair, and the open grain takes stain and clear finish predictably so the post can be matched to treads, rail and flooring.
