Solid oak stair tread stock supplied in a long length, intended to be cut to width and depth for individual steps in a staircase. Oak is the traditional choice for treads because of its hardness, tight grain and resistance to denting under foot traffic, and because it takes stain and clear finish evenly.

The 5/4 nominal thickness is the standard stair-tread thickness, giving enough material to carry the nosing profile at the front edge and to hold up over an open riser or a stringer notch. The blank arrives square-edged, so the nosing can be routed, the tread mitred at returns, and the back edge scribed to the riser during installation.

Finishing is done after fitting. Treads are normally sanded, sealed and top-coated on site, or prefinished off the stair and set in place, and are frequently paired with painted risers for a two-tone stair.
