Clear pine board is a solid softwood board sold in nominal one-by dimensions and surfaced four sides, with the actual thickness and width running slightly under the nominal call-out after milling. The clear grade means the board is selected to be free of knots and other visible defects on the face, so it takes paint and stain evenly and does not telegraph knot bleed through a finish.

Pine is light, dimensionally stable when kept dry, and easy to work with hand and power tools. It rips, crosscuts, routs and takes fasteners without splitting at the edges when nailed carefully, which makes it the default choice for interior trim, shelving, casework and built-ups that need to be cut and fitted on site.

Boards are intended for interior use. Left exposed to weather without a finish, pine has no natural decay resistance, so exterior applications require priming and sealing on all faces and edges, or a treated or naturally durable species instead.
