Red oak is a ring-porous North American hardwood used where trim and millwork need to take a stain, hold a crisp profile and stand up to handling. S4S means the board has been surfaced on all four sides, so it arrives square-edged, flat and ready to cut, rip or run through a shaper without further milling.

As a solid hardwood board it can be worked with ordinary carpentry tools, glues cleanly and holds screws and fasteners well. The open grain takes stain readily and the pronounced figure is what most interior trim packages are matching when they specify oak.

Nominal 1 in. stock is dressed to a finished thickness slightly under the called-out size, which is normal for surfaced lumber and should be accounted for when fitting into existing trim or casework.
