Red oak is the workhorse domestic hardwood of North American millwork, valued for its open pore structure, pronounced grain and consistent machining behavior. Boards like this one are sold surfaced and squared, ready to be ripped, planed or moulded into finished trim and casework.

The species takes stain readily and evenly, which is why it remains the default when new trim has to match existing oak millwork, flooring or stair parts. It glues, screws and nails well, holds a crisp profile off a router or shaper, and sands to a smooth finish surface. As with any solid hardwood, boards should be stored flat and allowed to acclimate to interior conditions before milling and installing.

Nominal thickness and width follow standard lumber convention, so actual surfaced dimensions are slightly less than the stated figures.
