The joint between a window or door frame and the rough opening is where most drafts, wind-driven rain and heat loss get into a wall. Framing is cut loose for shimming and squaring, and that deliberate gap has to be closed with something that stays sealed after the unit is fastened and the trim goes on.

This is a sealant intended for exactly that perimeter joint. It is applied after the unit is set, shimmed and fastened but before casing, brickmould or interior trim covers the opening, filling the void between the jamb and the framing so the assembly reads as a continuous air and water barrier rather than a hole with a window in it.

Because a frame and the surrounding framing move at different rates through the seasons, a sealant used at an opening has to stay flexible rather than cure hard and crack away from one side of the joint. Sealants sold for window and door work are formulated with that movement in mind and for adhesion to the mix of substrates found at an opening.
