It is supplied as a separate piece for knock-down frame assembly, where the head and jambs are shipped flat and joined on site at the opening rather than arriving as a welded unit.

Formed from sheet steel with a return leg on each face, the head wraps the wall and conceals the edge of the surrounding construction. The throat depth is sized to the finished wall thickness so that the frame seats flush against both faces, and the head carries the stop that the door leaf closes against along with the strike-side preparation on the mating jamb.

Used with matching jambs of the same depth and opening size, it makes up the top of a commercial-style metal frame for a hollow metal or wood door in stud or masonry partition work.
