A solid red oak newel post in a plain square profile, used as the structural anchor point for a stair balustrade. The newel carries the handrail at the bottom of a flight, at landings and at turns, and takes the lateral load that the balusters alone cannot.

The square section is left unturned and unfluted, which suits Craftsman, Shaker and contemporary stair work and also gives a clean blank for a site-applied box cap or ball top. Oak takes stain evenly and holds crisp arrises where the post is mortised or drilled for rail and fillet, and it can equally be primed and painted where the post is part of a two-tone stair.

Posts of this type are normally installed over a mounting hardware kit or dowel screw fixed to the framing, then trimmed at the top after the rail height is set.

Key Features

• Solid oak construction, a dense closed-grain hardwood that machines cleanly and holds fasteners in the mortise
• Plain square profile with no turning, suited to Craftsman, Shaker and modern balustrades
• Serves as the structural anchor for the handrail and balusters rather than a decorative element only
• Accepts stain, clear finish or paint; oak grain takes penetrating stain evenly
• Square top can be left plain or fitted with a separate ball, urn or box cap
• Can be cut to length from the top to suit finished rail height and stair pitch
• Sold individually by the piece

Applications

• Starting newel at the bottom step of an interior stair
• Landing and intermediate posts where a handrail changes direction
• Terminal post where a balustrade meets a wall or floor level
