White rigid foam board of the type used for continuous insulation and general sheathing work. Expanded polystyrene boards like this one are lightweight, dimensionally stable and easy to handle on a ladder or scaffold by a single worker.

The thin profile suits jobs where a modest thermal break is wanted without building out wall or ceiling depth much: behind siding, over masonry before furring, or as a backer layer under finish materials. Boards score and snap cleanly with a utility knife and straightedge, and can be trimmed around outlets, pipe penetrations and framing irregularities without special tools.

Foam board is combustible and, in habitable spaces, is normally covered by an approved finish material such as gypsum board. Fasten with wide-head nails, plastic-cap fasteners or foam-compatible adhesive, and tape or seal board joints where a continuous layer is intended.
