Solid pine stair tread stock, milled from softwood in the 5/4 nominal thickness commonly used for residential steps. It is sold in long lengths so treads can be cut to the finished run width on site, which lets a carpenter fit each step individually to walls, skirt boards and stringers that are rarely perfectly parallel.

Pine works easily with standard hand and power tools, takes fasteners without pre-drilling in most cases, and accepts stain, paint or clear finish. As a softwood it dents more readily than oak or maple, so it is most often used where the stair will be painted, carpeted, or is in a secondary location such as a basement, porch or utility stair.

Treads are typically installed over cut stringers or on a housed-stringer stair, with a nosing profile cut or applied at the front edge and risers fitted behind.
