Red oak is an open-grained hardwood with a pronounced ring-porous figure and a warm reddish-brown cast. It machines cleanly, holds screws and joinery well, and takes stain and clear finish predictably, which is why it remains the default species for interior trim, stair parts and built-in casework.

Nominal 5/4 stock is dressed to a finished thickness slightly under its nominal call-out, in the way of all surfaced lumber. Wide boards of this kind are typically used for shelving, stair treads, wide casing and panel glue-ups where a single full-width piece avoids a seam.
