A door sweep is the strip that closes the gap between the bottom of a door and the threshold or finish floor. This one is a brush-type sweep: an extruded aluminum holder in a silver finish carrying a dense row of nylon bristles, screwed to the face of the door bottom so the bristles ride on the floor.

Bristles are the right choice where a solid rubber or vinyl blade would bind. They flex over uneven thresholds, saddles, tile-to-carpet transitions and slightly out-of-level slabs, and they keep contact as the door swings without the drag and squeal a fin seal produces. The result is a barrier against drafts, blown dust, leaf litter, insects, light and some of the noise that passes under a closed door.

Installation is surface-mount and non-destructive: hold the sweep so the brush just touches the floor with the door closed, mark the screw locations, and fasten through the holder. The aluminum can be cut to length with a hacksaw and the brush trimmed with shears if the door is narrower than the sweep.

Key Features

• Extruded aluminum holder with a nylon bristle insert, a construction that resists corrosion and holds its shape in service
• Silver finish that blends with aluminum storefront, satin chrome and brushed hardware
• Brush seal flexes over saddles, thresholds and carpet transitions instead of dragging or catching like a rigid blade
• Blocks drafts, dust, insects, light spill and some airborne noise at the door bottom
• Surface-mounts to the face of the door with screws, so no mortising or door removal is required
• Aluminum holder can be cut down with a hacksaw and the bristles trimmed with shears to fit a narrower door
• Suits both in-swing and out-swing doors, and can be mounted interior or exterior face depending on the swing

Applications

• Exterior entry and back doors that leak air at the threshold
• Interior doors over uneven or transitioning floor finishes
• Garage service doors and basement doors where dust and insects get in
• Commercial and institutional doors that see heavy traffic and need a sweep that will not tear
• Shop, warehouse and mechanical room man doors
• Retrofit weatherization work on existing doors where the original sweep has worn out
• Doors that swing over carpet, where a rubber or vinyl sweep would bind
