A plastic access door is a framed cover that closes off an opening cut into drywall, plaster or a ceiling so the concealed services behind it can be reached without cutting the finish again. The frame sets into the opening and its flange laps over the surrounding board, hiding the cut edges, while the panel itself lifts or swings out of the way when the cavity has to be opened.

Moulded plastic is the usual choice where the panel sits in a damp or occasionally wet location, such as behind a tub or in a laundry wall, because it will not rust, corrode or stain the surrounding finish the way a painted steel panel can.
