Iron balusters form the vertical infill of a stair balustrade, spanning from the tread or shoe rail up to the underside of the handrail. They carry the guard infill and close the openings between posts, and are commonly used to replace turned wood balusters when a stair is being updated to a mixed wood-and-iron look.

This baluster is finished in black, the standard colour for iron stair infill because it reads as a dark line against stained or painted treads and rails. Installation is typically by drilling the tread and handrail, seating the baluster in the holes and setting it with construction adhesive or epoxy, or by using shoe plates and set screws where the baluster lands on a shoe rail. Balusters are sold and counted individually, so the layout and spacing of the stair determines how many are required.

Iron balusters are usually installed in a repeating pattern, alternating plain and decorative patterns across a flight, and can be cut to length on site with an abrasive wheel where the run over a rake requires it.
