It reflects less light than semi-gloss or gloss, which keeps sanding scratches, grain raise and small surface irregularities from being telegraphed under raking light, and it stays presentable longer between maintenance coats. Because the finish is clear rather than tinted, it can go over bare wood or over a compatible stain without shifting the color the customer signed off on.

Polyurethane is applied in thin coats rather than one heavy pass, with a light scuff-sand and a thorough dust removal between coats so each layer bonds to the one below. Stirring rather than shaking keeps flattening agents in suspension and avoids working bubbles into the film.
