Polyurethane is the workhorse clear topcoat for interior woodwork: a film-forming resin that cures to a hard, continuous layer over bare or stained wood and takes the abrasion, spills and handling that the wood underneath cannot. Minwax lists this finish for interior projects such as woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets and floors.

The semi-gloss sheen sits between satin and full gloss. It reflects enough light to read as a finished, slightly lustrous surface and to wipe clean easily, without the mirror return of a gloss coat that telegraphs every sanding scratch and dust nib. On trim and cabinetry it is the usual compromise when a satin coat looks too flat next to painted work.

Polyurethane is applied in thin coats over a clean, sanded, dust-free surface, with a light scuff-sand between coats for mechanical adhesion. Two or more coats are normal, with the final coat left to harden before the surface is put back into service. It can go over cured oil-based wood stain or directly onto sanded bare wood.
