A volute is the scrolled starting fitting that terminates a stair handrail at the bottom step, curving the rail into a spiral that sits over a starting newel or volute newel on a bullnose tread. This one is the right-hand version, meaning the scroll turns to the right as you face up the stairs.

Machined from solid oak, the fitting is supplied unfinished so it can be sanded, stained and topcoated to match the rail, treads and balustrade around it. It is joined to the straight handrail run with a rail bolt and glue block in the usual way, and the underside of the scroll is drilled or bored on site for the balusters that carry it.
