A plain iron baluster is the vertical infill member that fills the space between a stair's treads or shoe rail and the underside of the handrail. The straight, unadorned bar profile is the most common pattern in iron balustrades, used on its own for a clean contemporary run or mixed with decorative twist and basket balusters to break up the rhythm of a long stair.

Iron balusters are the standard replacement when a wood balustrade is being updated without rebuilding the newels and handrail. The bar is cut to length on site to suit the rake of the stair or a level balcony run, then set into a drilled hole or a shoe and fixed with epoxy or a set screw. Because each piece is cut individually, the same baluster works on stairs of different pitches and on landings.

Key Features

  • Plain straight bar pattern with no decorative collars or twists
  • Iron construction for a rigid infill member that resists flexing between rail and tread
  • Cut to length on site for raking stair runs or level balcony sections
  • Installs into drilled treads and handrail, or with shoes and set screws over a shoe rail
  • Sold by the piece so quantities can be matched to baluster spacing on a given run
  • Mixes with decorative iron patterns of the same series for alternating layouts

Applications

  • Interior stair balustrades in place of wood balusters
  • Balcony and landing guard infill
  • Iron baluster retrofits over existing newels and handrail
  • Mixed patterns alternating plain bars with decorative balusters
  • New stair systems using shoe rail and shoe plate installation
