A door knob wall protector is a rigid round disc that mounts on the wall at the point a swinging door's knob or lever strikes it. It takes the repeated impact that would otherwise punch through the drywall paper and crush the gypsum core behind it, a failure that is cheap to prevent and tedious to patch once it happens.

This one is a self-adhesive hard plastic shield in white, with a smooth paintable face so it can be finished to match the wall after it is set. Installation is a peel-and-stick operation on a clean, dry, dust-free surface, with no fasteners or wall anchors involved. The same disc also works as a cover for an existing knob hole or dent, spanning the damaged area and keeping the door from working it open any further.

Shepherd Hardware lists this item as part number 9551. It is sold individually.

Key Features

• Rigid plastic disc absorbs and spreads door knob impact across the wall surface instead of concentrating it on one point of the drywall face
• Self-adhesive backing; mounts by peeling and pressing, with no screws, anchors or wall penetrations
• Smooth paintable face takes latex or oil wall paint so the shield can be blended into the finished wall
• White finish out of the package, neutral against most painted and primed interior walls
• Round profile with no hardware to align, so placement is set by marking where the knob contacts the wall
• Doubles as a cover plate over an existing knob hole or dent, concealing the damage and preventing it from spreading
• Sold as a single piece for per-opening ordering

Applications

• Interior passage and bedroom doors that swing back against an unprotected wall
• Bathroom and closet doors in tight hallways where there is no room for a floor or baseboard stop
• Rental unit and property-management turnovers, covering knob holes without a drywall patch
• Office, classroom and corridor doors in light commercial interiors
• Behind lever handles and knobs on hollow-core doors in residential remodels
• Entry vestibules and utility rooms where a door is regularly pushed open fast
• Punch-list repairs at the end of a job where wall dings need to be concealed
