Insulation supports are stiff spring-wire rods that hold batt insulation up in a framing cavity without staples, twine or netting. The wire is cut slightly longer than the cavity it serves, so it bows when pushed into place and holds by spring tension against the joists.

The IS series from USP (now part of MiTek) is the standard version of this item: a plain carbon steel wire with chisel-cut ends that bite into the wood framing so the rod stays where it was set. Supports are pushed in after the batt is positioned, working from below, which makes them practical in crawl spaces and other areas where there is no room to work from above.

Rods are spaced along the run at whatever interval the batt needs to stay tight to the subfloor or deck, and they can be removed and reused if the insulation has to come down for wiring or plumbing work later.
